History And Background Of Betta Fish

[ad_1]

Historically speaking, Betta Fish are said to have gotten their name from an ancient clan of Asian warriors called the “Bettah.” They were given these warriors’ names because about 150 years ago people enjoyed participating in a popular sport that involved the fighting of two of these warrior fish. (In fact, the sport was so popular that it was regulated – and taxed – by the King of Siam!)

One interesting note about Betta fish fighting is that, unlike cock or dog fighting in the west, at Siamese fighting fish tournaments, the actual fight was more to test the bravery of the fish, rather than a fight to see how much damage would be inflicted, or a death match.

Spectators bet on how long a particular fish would fight, and which one would give up first. (In fact, most fish would only fight once or twice, and then live out the remainder of their lives being pampered and used for breeding.)

Natural Habitat

A Betta fish’s natural habitat is in shallow, tropical water. This is because they need to be able to surface frequently, in order to breathe air. They can be found in nature in rice paddies, drainage ditches, slow moving streams and fresh water ponds. Betta fish have even been known thrive in large puddles! Their natural food source is insects and mosquito larvae.

How Breeding Began

According to historical accounts, a close friend of the King of Siam, Dr. Theodore Cantor received a pair of breeding Bettas from the king in 1840. The doctor bred them and studied them for several years, and then wrote a scientific paper about them, giving them a Latin name of “Macropodus Pugnax.” However, shortly after his paper was published, Dr. Cantor discovered that a species by that name already existed, and so the fish were renamed “Betta Splendens.”

Several breeding pairs of Bettas where sent to Germany in 1896 and then in 1910, Mr. Frank Locke of San Francisco California imported several Bettas to the U.S.A.

One of the fish that he received had unusual red fins – and he excitedly thought he had discovered a new species, and named it “Betta Cambodia.” In reality, he had one of the first of the Betta splendens that had naturally developed new colors and characteristics through breeding.

Since that time, breeders have been able to develop Bettas with all of the vibrant coloring and varied fin shapes that we find today. Betta breeding has become a profitable and ongoing passion for many people today, many of whom started with just one or two Bettas in a small aquarium.

I Dare You! By William H Danforth – A Book Review

[ad_1]

Title and Author: I Dare You! by William H. Danforth

Synopsis of Content:

In this mid 20th Century motivational classic the author, a successful businessman and crusader for youth programs in St. Louis, Missouri, William Danforth dares you and any other reader to do great things and to be great. Originally published in 1953 it has been republished by several sources in recent years.

Although the book is aimed at youth and young adults challenging them to become more than they might first believe possible it has motivational value for all ages. Danforth was a strong believer that we limit ourselves and that by seizing opportunity and believing in our virtually unlimited potential we could exceed all expectations, including our own, and dare to be great.

In addition to providing raw motivational material the book discusses seven primary areas, called “dares” where the author challenges the reader to go deeper and strive further in life. They include adventure, accomplishments, strength, creativity, magnetic personality, character, and the willingness to share what you have. These qualities will be recognized as common to most success books and materials published over the past two centuries. What distinguishes Danforth’s little book is his framing his challenge as a dare.

While the attributes which Danforth promotes are found in works by Marsden, Hill and others the daring approach used by this author is unique. It appealed to the young and youthful, whether it be the high school aged children who attended his summer camps or the young men entering the business world.

Readability/Writing Quality:

The Executive Books edition is only 144 pages. It is easy to read, having been aimed at young people. It may appear somewhat na├»ve and simplistic by today’s standards. However the motivational truths in this work are no less true today than they were over 60 years ago.

Notes on Author:

William Danforth was the founder and long time President of the Ralston Purina Company. He also served as President of the American Youth Foundation and was very active in the YMCA. During his summers he devoted his time to training and helping less fortunate young people at summer camps in Michigan and elsewhere. He died in 1956.

Three Great Ideas You Can Use:

1. “Wealth, notoriety, place, and power are no measure of success whatever. The only true measure of success is the ration between what we might have done and what we might have been on the one hand, and the thing we have made and the thing we have mad of ourselves on the other”.

2. Each of us has four hidden giants or resources which we must develop constantly to attain greatness. These include the physical, the mental, the social and the spiritual aspects. To attain a balanced and powerful life you must nourish each of these aspects fully.

3. Continuous learning and improvement are essential to achievement. The author recommends a program of reading not less than one book per month. It will pay you back many times.

Ron Paul Predicts a Collapse of the Housing Market

[ad_1]

Earlier this year, Ron Paul wrote an article wherein he predicts a collapse of the US housing market. His perspective is unique in that he’s placing the blame for this housing market collapse squarely on the shoulders of the Federal Reserve. Take a look at what Ron Paul had to say in his article – Don’t Blame the Market for the Housing Bubble (Reference One):

“The U.S. housing market, long considered vulnerable by many economists, is now on the verge of suffering a serious collapse in many regions. Commodities guru and hedge fund manager Jim Rogers warns that real estate in expensive bubble areas will drop 40 or 50%. Mainstream media outlets like the New York Times are reporting breathlessly about the possibility of widespread defaults on subprime mortgages.”

While Dr. Paul is expressing his concerns of an inevitable collapse in the US Housing Market – the thrust of arguments point toward the federal intervention of the Federal Reserve as being the main source of the problem. This is completely consistent with his views that federal intervention – of almost any kind – is not Constitutional. In the same article (Reference One), Ron Paul considers the Federal Reserve to be too liberal in its lending:

“But capitalism is not to blame for the housing bubble, the Federal Reserve is. Specifically, Fed intervention in the economy – through the manipulation of interest rates and the creation of money – caused the artificial boom in mortgage lending.”

Earlier this week, in an article by the New York Times (Reference Two), three officials of the Federal Reserve said that serious problems in the housing market are a threat to the economy. This is exactly what Ron Paul had predicted a few months earlier this year. Although the Federal Reserve doesn’t seem to be blaming themselves for the housing market collapse – I doubt they ever would.

Regardless, it seems the Ron Paul has been quite accurate in his assessment and prediction of the housing markets.

An Analysis of Scalp Med Complaints

[ad_1]

There are a fair number of Scalp Med complaints and related stories resulting from unsuccessful user experiences with the product on the Internet. But to be fair, there are also a significant number of positive testimonials out there as well.

Contrary to the complaints, the company’s website details how they have helped thousands of people suffering from hair loss and it also provides numerous case studies and written testimonial success stories of people it has helped to regrow hair.

Without a doubt, almost any company doing business with the general public will have some customer grievances. So; to get a better feel for the seriousness of the Scalp Med complaints, I reviewed the company’s current status with the Better Business Bureau.

I determined that the company was started on January 9th, 2000 with the stated business objective of providing hair growth products to the general public.

Additionally; they were recently purchased by the infomercial powerhouse Guthy Renker, which adds both credibility and financial strength to the brand.

Overview of the Scalp Med complaints currently lodged with the Better Business Bureau:

The company currently maintains a Triple A rating with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB also reports that proper consideration has been given to all complaints as presented to the company to date.

Specifically, there were 118 Scalp Med complaints lodged, closed and reported on by the BBB for the last 36 months.

In 83 of the cases the Scalp Med complaints department issued a full refund as the customer requested.

In 5 of the cases the company made a partial refund.

In 29 of the cases, the company agreed to perform according to their contract.

In 1 instance they refused to make an adjustment based on what were deemed to be justifiable reasons.

The most common Scalp Med complaints all have a similar theme related to the lack of success that the quoted users have had with Scalp Med.

Not to minimize the negative experiences that some individuals have had with this hair regrowth product; it is important however to recognize that hair loss is a complex affliction that cannot easily be addressed in the best of circumstances.

Additional factors that may inflate Scalp Med complaints are that any hair regrowth regimen takes both time (at least 3 months) and consistency of use to be successful. So it’s important to follow the products usage directions closely to maximize the chances for success. Any wavering from the recommended usage regimen can result in diminished results.

There can be no doubt that Scalp Med has the potential to regrow hair simply based on the fact that it contains Minoxidil; also known as Rogaine.

Minoxidil has been approved by the FDA as one of the few scientifically proven hair regrowth products on the market today, which means that any product that contains Minoxidil should also then be able to regrow hair due to the hair growth effects of this ingredient at a minimum.

Add to that the additional hair growth ingredients in the Scalp Med formulation and they claim that your chances of regrowing your hair are greatly increased with their product.

In closing; while there does exist a number of valid Scalp Med complaints, the number of complaints is not unreasonable due to the fact that the company sells a product that requires diligent long term application (at least 2 to 3 months) with results that can be somewhat hard to measure in many cases.

How Much Does an Amber Cost?

[ad_1]

The price of amber is determined by the different life forms which are found in the stone. Intact insects, plants, flowers etc will increase the value of amber and these stones will be highly priced. Typically, an amber necklace with say, a trapped dragonfly, will have a high price and will enjoy a heavy demand in the market.

The prices of these gems can vary depending upon the clarity, color, polish and size of the piece. The prices mentioned in this article are in general for gems of fairly good color and good clarity. Opaque pieces of amber can usually be bought quite cheap – for as much as $0.10 to $1 for a carat or less. For pieces around an inch in size and with insect inclusions, the prices can range from $50 to $60. An average stone of a good size and with inclusions would cost around $195.

Good wholesale quality beads can also be purchased for as low as $15. Shapeless and uneven pieces without any fossil inclusions ranging from 1 to 1.5 inches in size and weighing around 10 to 12 carats would cost anywhere between $30 to $40. Polished beads without any inclusions of about 1 centimeter usually cost from $1 to $2 per carat.

Many a times, this gem is heated to give it an old or aged look. These pieces usually cost less compared to a similar piece having the original color.

Amber pieces with unusual flora and fauna are a collector’s item. Fossils in this gem always increase its value and beauty. A pendant with inclusions is guaranteed to get a good price in the market. A carved ring is also very highly priced in the market.

A significant difference in the price of the amber is made depending on the period from which the amber originates from. The older the gemstone, the higher is its price. However, it is not easy to identify the age of the stone. Most gemological laboratories also do not often certify amber gemstones. The process of finding out the age of the amber stone involves identifying the inclusions present in the stone and estimating the period in which it existed.

There is an interesting piece of news about a piece of Dominican amber with inclusions. Recently, such a piece with a large lizard trapped inside it was sold for $ 75000. This figure cannot really give us a hint of how high a price this gemstone can fetch.

In fact, the amount of history associated with amber jewelry would only serve to increase its market value. Similarly, antique jewelry or a pendant with insect is very highly valued in the market.

There are frequent attempts made in the market to sell amber ‘simulants’ as genuine amber. Simulants of this gem include ambroid, copal resin, kauri gum, dammar, celluloid and plastic. These simulants would normally cost a fraction of what a real stone costs.

Thus, we can see that the price of this gemstone mostly depends upon factors such as age, inclusions, quality and size.

She left home without farewell after being caught at the scene when she was carrying on a clandestine love affair with Rose’s boyfriend. In terms of women, the climax comes as Rose gives up her admirable job to then bravely wears the high heels she likes to hide into wardrobe. She successfully goes through a change of outlook on her relationship with Maggie-her   unique  sister, the man she has wrongly loved and the man she should love and treasure at present. Everything can start from “head”, as well as “foot”, not just curing the sequela of losing love.

“When I feel bad, I like to treat myself. Clothes never look any good. Foods just make me fatter. Shoes always fit.” The lines, from Rose, reveal her secret: she is not the prude that she looks like in appearance, but a lovely girl who is keenly obsessed with various high heels as well. Numberless pairs of housed high heels are her bosom friend, listening to her success, happiness sharing her upset and cheering her up when she is in low spirit. Even though Rose just buy them then hide them without debut with them, she still be companied and placated by their sweetness and attention.

Men may leave and love may be pulled away, but high heels will always stay.

Pretty Foot Tattoos

[ad_1]

Foot tattoos are not only adorned by women but men too follow this fashion trend. If your work environment frowns upon tattoos, the foot is a great place to get one. Tattoos on the feet are inconspicuous and if you don’t wish to share your tattoo with everyone, this is one region that is usually covered. But they can be quite painful as it is a bony region with very little fat content. They can be unisex as well, so if you wish to ink something meaningful or symbolic for your other half, both of you can get one each on the foot. This way, not everyone gets to see it and it remains a sexy secret between the two of you.

But before you decide to get inked on your foot, remember that foot tattoos are particularly painful. Also, foot tattoos require extra precautions when compared to other part of your body. The healing period for a foot tattoo is considerable. You can’t cover the part of the foot which has the tattoo or anything that will rub against in constantly like socks or shoes. If you have to go out, the foot should be covered and a sunscreen lotion should be applied on it, with very less exposure to the sun. Utmost care has to be taken to keep your foot clean with regular warm water foot baths. You can’t scrub your foot; it has to be patted dry. Also, they tend to fade more easily than tattoos inked on other parts of the body. So you have to keep in mind that re-inking might be required regularly to keep you tattoo constantly looking attractive and a lot of care has to be taken of the tattoo as well as your foot.

But, if you are one of those people who need striking and   unique  art which is less common than these tattoos is the way to go as very few people get it done and it usually stands out when on display. Also, if you are a private person and don’t wish to put your personal body art on display, a tattoo on foot is a good option. Usually they are inked from the upper foot going down, some prefer ankle tattoos as well. One of the common designs that are done on the foot is stars – nautical or plain, a group of small stars starting from the upper corner of the foot till mid foot look really cool. A skeleton of the foot bones looks really cool and not at all macabre. Tribal designs, chains, skulls and flames are some common designs men prefer to ink onto their foot.

Benefits of Venison – A Natural Fat Burning Food!

[ad_1]

Discover the incredible weight loss benefits of venison, how to best prepare it and how much you should eat to get maximum benefit from venison – one of nature’s amazing fat burning foods.

Venison or game meat encompasses elk and moose as well as deer. While they are harder to find, caribou and antelope are also forms of venison.

Venison is hard to come by if you are not a hunter, but you might find it in a specialty market. If you have a hunter in the family, this could also be a source of venison. You may at least get to enjoy a meal or two featuring this meat that is both delicious and nutritious and great support for your fat burning regimen.

Deer meat has a deep, full flavor and a tender, yet supple, texture. Deer can be hunted wild, or they may be raised on a farm. The flavor of the meat depends upon the diet of the animal. A deer that has foraged will taste different than a domestic deer. In any case, deer meat has an awesome flavor.

Fat Burning Benefits of Venison

Venison is incredibly low fat. It is very low in saturated fat, and it is also low in calories.

A 3-ounce serving of venison has about 134 calories, 3 grams of fat, and 1 gram of saturated fat. A similar serving of elk meat will yield 124 calories and 2 fat grams – one of those saturated fat. Moose meat contains 114 calories and 1 gram fat, but not any saturated fats.

Here are the benefits you will derive from venison: It is a great source of vitamins B12, B2, B6, and niacin. It also contains the minerals: zinc, selenium, iron, phosphorous, and copper. It is an excellent source of high-quality protein.

Venison contains iron, which is a building block of hemoglobin. This is what makes it possible for your blood to transport oxygen from your lungs throughout your body. Additionally, hemoglobin is an essential part of the enzyme systems that regulate metabolism and the production of energy.

Venison contains B vitamins (that is, B12 and B6), which assist in keeping homocysteine levels from becoming unhealthily high.

Here are the dangers of high levels of homocysteine:
The worsening of diabetic heart disease or atherosclerosis.
Damage to blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack or a stroke.

Osteoporosis and colon cancer may be prevented with the consumption of vitamin B12, which works to protect the colon against carcinogens.

Venison contains a good supply of Vitamin B2 (riboflavin). This vitamin helps with promoting a steady supply of oxygen based energy to your body. This is especially useful for the heart and muscles of the body. The protein like antioxidant molecule known as glutathione must be recycled constantly. Riboflavin helps to protect this delicate molecule.

Venison contains niacin to combat the incidence of osteoporosis. It also produces starch in the liver and muscles that can converted into energy.

Preparing Venison

When you choose your venison (deer meat) try to find meat from younger deer. It should be dark with flesh that is finely grained and fat that is clean and white. Fat is the source of the real taste. Look at the recommended sell-by date to find fresh venison in stores. Venison can be purchased in the freezer section or as fresh meat.

You’ll need to trim any fat off the deer, elk, or moose before you grill or broil it.

Venison is very vulnerable and perishable, thus it is vital to place it in the coldest section of your fridge right away. When you plan to use it within a couple days, keep it in its wrapper to reduce handling. If you can’t use it right away, be sure to wrap it properly for the freezer (using aluminum foil or freezer paper) and freeze it promptly. It won’t spoil for a minimum of three to six months.

Exercise caution as you handle raw venison, being sure to rinse any utensils completely. When you marinate your venison, be sure to keep it in the refrigerator. If you leave it out, it is sure to spoil, as it is very heat sensitive. Frozen venison should be thawed out in the fridge.

One excellent way to enjoy venison is simply as a steak or on kabobs. You can also make venison jerky. It can be substituted for many other meats such as turkey or beef in stew or lasagna.

Here are some ways to enjoy elk meat: Chili, meat loaf, roast, stew, burgers, barbecue, or slow cooked in the crock pot.

Here are some ways to enjoy moose meat: Kabobs, hoagies, roast, meatballs, stroganoff, or stew.

Recommended Serving Size

A typical portion of venison is about 3 or 4 ounces per person.
